Venus Williams澳網出師不利，第一輪在先勝一盤的情況下，被對手逆轉，結束年度第一場大滿貫的征途。

現世界排名38的Williams，第一輪遭遇大會第二十二種子、來自俄羅斯的Ekaterina Makarova，以6-2、4-6、4-6被擊敗。

這是Williams繼2006年後，再度於澳網第一輪出局，她曾於2003年晉級決賽，也是個人在澳網最佳成績。

「我這個禮拜擊球狀況都很好，很顯然地，第一輪沒有贏真的令人失望。」她進一步提到，輸掉任何比賽都不是件好玩的事情，「尤其在這麼重大的比賽。」

她與妹妹Serena Williams 這次有報名澳網雙打，兩人第一輪對手為大會第十二種子來自法國的Kristina Mladenovic與義大利的Flavia Pennetta。
